A 36-year-old Togolese man, Noukounou Daniel, was brutally murdered by suspected land grabbers in the Ologuede area of Ogun State.
The tragic incident occurred on November 27, 2024, at Atan, Sokoto Road, where Daniel had gone to inspect his land ahead of a planned building project. According to his friend Peter John, Daniel was attacked and fatally injured with machetes during a confrontation with the land grabbers.
The attackers reportedly fled with Daniel’s phone and motorbike after the assault. Due to the severity of his injuries, his body could not be preserved in a mortuary and was immediately buried. Following the incident, Daniel’s family relocated to the Benin Republic for their safety.
His elder brother, Noukounou Friday, recounted that the family reported him missing to the police after he failed to return home. They were later called to identify his body at the police station.
The Togolese diaspora in Nigeria has condemned the murder and called for a thorough investigation. In a letter to the Atan Ota Divisional Police, the High Council of Togolese Abroad urged authorities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, emphasizing the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Togo.
The Ogun State Police Command has yet to confirm the incident, with its spokesperson stating she was unaware of the case.
This incident highlights the recurring problem of land-grabbing activities in the area, which has caused distress and fear among residents.
