On September 25, 2024, a devastating canoe accident along Maiduguri Road in Borno State resulted in the tragic loss of four lives, including a five-month-old infant. This incident unfolded around 4 PM, as reported by Nahum Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state.
According to Daso, the canoe, which was carrying multiple passengers, became submerged due to rising floodwaters in the area. The victims have been identified as Mallum Shettima, Maimuna Akura, Umira Bulama, and Yagana Kawu. All deceased individuals hailed from the Bulabulin Ward in Dikwa, with the adult female, Mallum Shettima, coming from Marte Local Government Area.
The PPRO provided a detailed account of the accident, stating that a Good Samaritan alerted the Dikwa Divisional Police Headquarters about the distressing situation. The report indicated that the canoe accident occurred in the Bakassi community, situated between Mafa and Dikwa. Tragically, the incident led to the drowning of four females, prompting immediate police intervention.
Upon arrival at the scene, police officers conducted a rescue operation and transported the victims to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the medical personnel confirmed their deaths shortly after arrival. The families of the deceased have since received the bodies for burial, adhering to Islamic rites.
In light of this incident, the PPRO emphasized the importance of adhering to safety regulations for boat operators in the state. He underscored the necessity of providing safety equipment, such as life jackets and safety buoys, to ensure passenger safety. The directive comes as Borno State continues to grapple with the aftermath of recent flooding, which has already claimed several lives.
Daso reiterated, “Following the recent canoe accident in Dikwa that led to the loss of four lives, the command highlights the critical importance of implementing safety protocols to prevent such tragedies.” He urged all canoe operators to comply with these safety measures, stressing that the safety and well-being of Borno residents remain the utmost priority, particularly during this challenging period characterized by flooding and its associated dangers.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with water travel during adverse weather conditions and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect vulnerable populations.
