In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the community of Nkpor Agu in Anambra State, the lifeless body of a baby, believed to be only a day old, was discovered on the premises of a local church on Engr Chukelu Street. This tragic find occurred in the early hours of Monday, August 15, 2024, and has left residents grappling with shock and grief.
Reports indicate that the baby girl was found covered with dried plantain leaves, leading to speculation among locals that she may have been abandoned in the dead of night. Eyewitnesses claim that the discovery has stirred a significant reaction within the community, prompting many to gather and witness the somber scene. A video circulating on social media has further amplified the situation, showing the area where the baby was found and urging anyone with information about the child’s mother to come forward and assist the police in their investigations.
The Chief Security Officer of the Nkpor community, who identified himself in the video, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident. “I had the misfortune of going to examine a dead one-day-old girl abandoned at a church premises at Engr Chukelu Street, Ububa South, Nkpor Agu,” he stated. He called on anyone who might have knowledge about the circumstances surrounding the abandonment to report to the authorities, emphasizing that the matter had already been reported to the Ogidi Police Division.
Residents had alerted local security personnel upon finding the abandoned baby, who then inspected the site before contacting the police for further assistance.
Chris Udeze, the community’s Chief Security Officer, shared insights into the ongoing investigation. He noted that efforts to trace the mother of the baby had been fruitless, as no residents recognized the child. “We were alerted to the scene of the abandoned dead baby on Monday morning, and when we arrived, we found the lifeless body, suspected to be that of a one-day-old baby covered with leaves,” Udeze explained. He further added that while the exact time of abandonment remains uncertain, they suspect it occurred late Sunday night.
Udeze reported that upon assessing the situation, the community swiftly informed the Ogidi Police Division, which promptly dispatched officers to the scene to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment. Following their assessment, police personnel instructed that the baby’s body be removed for burial, while investigations continue with the assistance of community members who may have information regarding the mother.
Another resident, identified only as Nkechi, reflected on the tragedy, suggesting that the baby was likely abandoned by a woman in crisis, possibly due to an unwanted pregnancy. “The person must have abandoned the baby while still alive, but due to severe exposure to cold, the baby died. This is the first time we are seeing such an occurrence in the area,” she lamented.
In response to the incident, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, expressed his dismay and assured that the case would be escalated to the Area Commander for thorough investigation. A police source from the Ogidi Division, preferring to remain anonymous, confirmed the discovery and stated that the body had been removed and buried. The source also mentioned that local residents had been urged to keep an eye out for any lactating women in the area whose babies were unaccounted for, as this could aid in identifying the mother and bringing her to justice.
This tragic event not only highlights the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals in society but also raises pressing questions about the support systems available for expectant mothers and the community’s role in preventing such heartbreaking incidents. As the investigation unfolds, the Nkpor community remains united in their quest for answers and justice for the innocent life lost.
