According to sources from the Ogun State Police Command, the fire was discovered when several individuals came looking for Falansa after he failed to respond to their attempts to reach him. A resident, known only as Kafaya, recounted the moment she realized something was amiss. She stated, “We didn’t think something of that nature had happened until two boys came to look for Falansa. I pointed his apartment to them when they asked where he was.” The grim reality of the situation was confirmed when those searching for him returned to inform her of his tragic fate, having succumbed to smoke inhalation.
The police spokesperson, Odutola Omolola, confirmed the incident on Sunday, explaining that the fire had engulfed the room where Falansa was sleeping, and it was reported to the Owode-Yewa Police Division later that morning. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered that Falansa’s motorcycle, which he had kept inside the room, had also been destroyed in the flames. The body was subsequently taken to the Ilaro mortuary for further examination.
This incident is not isolated, as it follows a similar tragic case in January 2024, when a fire in the Tudun Wada area of Kano State claimed the lives of seven family members, including both parents and their five children. That fire was believed to have been caused by a spark from an electrical plug, which ignited while the family was asleep, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and safety measures concerning fire hazards.
