In a somber development in Jigawa State, officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) have reported the recovery of two bodies from a pond in the Birninkudu Local Government Area. The deceased individuals, identified as 20-year-old Abubakar Alhaji and 25-year-old Abubakar Abdullahi, tragically drowned while attempting to cross the pond on their way to a market in Waza village.
The unfortunate incident took place on Monday around 11:00 AM. According to the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, the NSCDC received a distress call from community members shortly after the incident occurred, prompting an immediate response.
“Our Divisional Officer in Birninkudu, CSC Muhammad Garba, confirmed that the unit received a distress call from residents at approximately 11:30 AM,” Tijjani stated in a press release from Dutse. He noted that NSCDC personnel were promptly deployed to the scene to conduct a rescue operation.
With the support of local community members, the NSCDC team engaged in a search and rescue mission, which lasted about 48 minutes. The bodies of the two victims were subsequently recovered from the pond. Following the recovery, the remains were transported to a health facility in Waza for further processing.
In a compassionate gesture, Tijjani explained that the remains were handed over to the families of the deceased, who have since laid them to rest according to Islamic rites. He expressed condolences on behalf of the NSCDC, acknowledging the profound loss experienced by the families and the community at large.
This tragic incident comes against the backdrop of ongoing challenges faced by Jigawa State, including recent flooding events that have claimed lives and caused extensive damage in the region. The state has recently witnessed several unfortunate occurrences, including a building collapse that resulted in the deaths of a father and son.
The community’s response in the aftermath of this incident highlights the solidarity and support that often emerges during times of tragedy. As the families mourn their losses, the need for increased awareness and safety measures around water bodies in the region becomes more apparent.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unforeseen circumstances that can lead to tragedy. The NSCDC continues to emphasize its commitment to public safety and preparedness, urging community members to exercise caution and report any emergencies promptly to prevent further loss of life.
