On September 9, 2024, a catastrophic petrol tanker explosion in Niger State resulted in the tragic loss of 48 lives, with mass burials held in the Agaie Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, involved a head-on collision between a petrol tanker and a truck transporting travelers and cattle from Wudil, Kano State, en route to Lagos.

The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arab, provided details about the disaster, revealing that the victims were burned beyond recognition, making a mass burial necessary. Following extensive search and rescue operations, the agency recovered an additional 18 bodies, bringing the total number of fatalities to 48. Baba-Arab noted, “All the deceased have been given a mass burial due to the extent of their injuries.”

The tragic event unfolded around 12:30 AM along the Lapai-Agaie road, approximately two kilometers from the Dendo community. It highlighted that the petrol tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), collided with the truck carrying both passengers and livestock. The agency’s Rapid Response Team, in collaboration with local emergency management officials, continues to work on-site, searching for any additional victims and securing the area.

This devastating incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, particularly in regions where heavy vehicles frequently navigate narrow roads. As the community mourns the loss of life, officials are likely to review safety protocols to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
