In a troubling incident that has escalated tensions in the occupied West Bank, dozens of Israeli settlers launched an attack on the village of Jit, located near Nablus, resulting in significant destruction and the tragic death of a young Palestinian man. As reported by the Palestinian health ministry, the violence unfolded on Thursday evening, leading to the death of a local villager in his early 20s and leaving another individual critically injured.
Eyewitness accounts and reports indicate that the settlers, some of whom were masked, engaged in violent actions, throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails while setting fire to houses and vehicles within the village. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the occurrence of the shooting incident and stated that they were investigating the reports of fatalities linked to the attack.
Social media footage from the scene depicted plumes of smoke rising above the village, illustrating the extent of the damage inflicted during the assault. The situation prompted a swift response from Israeli authorities, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issuing a statement condemning the violence. Netanyahu asserted that those responsible for the attacks would be identified and prosecuted, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing such criminal acts.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also weighed in on the incident, characterizing the attackers as an “extreme minority” that undermines the law-abiding members of the settler community and tarnishes Israel’s reputation on the global stage. Herzog called for immediate action from law enforcement to ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
In response to the violence, the IDF reported that its forces were deployed to the village shortly after receiving notifications about the unrest. They attempted to disperse the crowds by firing into the air and subsequently removed the attackers from Jit. Furthermore, a joint investigation was launched, involving the IDF, Israel’s security agency Shin Bet, and Israeli police, to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding this serious incident.
The violence in Jit has drawn international condemnation, with the United States describing the attacks by settlers as “unacceptable” and urging Israeli authorities to intervene to protect all communities from harm. A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council stated that it is crucial for Israel to hold all perpetrators of such violence accountable.
Concerns about settler violence in the West Bank have been mounting, particularly as Palestinian communities frequently accuse Israeli security forces of failing to intervene during such attacks. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), there have been over 1,000 documented incidents of violence by settlers against Palestinians since October, resulting in significant displacement and fatalities. Reports indicate that 107 of these attacks have led to Palestinian deaths, while numerous others have caused extensive damage to property.
As the world remains focused on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the alarming rise in settler violence has prompted the United States, European Union, and United Kingdom to impose sanctions on certain settler leaders and, notably, on entire settler outposts for the first time.
