In Ogun State, a trainee herbalist, Ifagbenga Taiwo, has confessed to killing his 41-day-old son, claiming he was under the influence of a spell at the time of the act. The incident occurred in the Keesi area of Adatan, Abeokuta, on Monday, shocking the local community.
According to police reports, Taiwo’s wife, Raimat Wasilat, discovered their infant with a slit throat after leaving him unattended while washing clothes outside their home. Taiwo fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police.
In an interrogation video, Taiwo explained how he felt compelled to commit the act after returning home to retrieve charms he had forgotten. He described feeling restless and possessed by an uncontrollable urge to harm someone.
Speaking in Yoruba, he recalled, “I felt like something was circulating in my body, urging me to commit a crime. I was not in control of myself.” He detailed how he used a knife from his mother’s room to carry out the act, only regaining awareness after the crime.
Taiwo denied allegations that the killing was part of a plot to divorce his wife, stating, “I love my wife and did not plan to separate from her. I don’t know how this happened.”
He has since expressed remorse, appealing to authorities for mercy. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, with the Ogun State Police Command confirming that charges will be filed after further inquiries.
