Trump Threatens Legal Action Against Second Dan Sullivan in Alaska Senate Race

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened possible legal action against a second candidate named Dan Sullivan in Alaska’s Senate race, arguing that the challenger’s presence on the ballot could confuse voters and undermine the re-election bid of Republican Senator Dan Sullivan.

Trump’s intervention has intensified attention on an unusual contest involving two candidates with the same name ahead of the November 2026 general election.

The president has accused Democrats of orchestrating the situation to divert votes from the incumbent senator, whom he has endorsed. However, the Alaska Democratic Party and the campaign of Democratic candidate Mary Peltola have denied any involvement with either Dan Sullivan’s campaign.

The challenger, Dan J. Sullivan, is a retired fifth-grade teacher from Petersburg, Alaska. He has defended his decision to contest the election, saying the name belongs to his family and that he has the right to participate in the race.

The dispute has already faced legal scrutiny. In June 2026, the Alaska Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision allowing the challenger to remain on the ballot after an attempt to remove him.

Trump has also indicated that federal authorities are examining the matter. Following a campaign rally in Alaska in October, he told Fox News that officials were looking into the second candidate, while describing his candidacy as an alleged attempt to take votes away from the incumbent.

However, the allegations of deliberate electoral manipulation have not been established as fact, and the challenger has rejected pressure to withdraw.

Alaska operates a nonpartisan primary system in which the four leading candidates advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. The state also uses ranked-choice voting, allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference.

The controversy comes as Republicans and Democrats compete for control of the U.S. Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. Alaska’s Senate contest has attracted national attention because of its potential significance to the balance of power in Congress.

Whether further legal proceedings will affect the ballot remains a key question as the election approaches.
