Trump to Host Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at White House in July as U.S.-Iraq Relations Enter New Phase”

United States President Donald Trump is set to welcome Iraqi Prime Minister designate Ali al-Zaidi to the White House in mid July, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between Washington and Baghdad as both countries seek to strengthen strategic cooperation and address key regional challenges.

According to a joint statement issued through the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Trump’s Special Presidential Envoy, Tom Barrack, conveyed the U.S. president’s intention to host Al-Zaidi for discussions focused on the future of the long-standing relationship between the United States and Iraq. The meeting is expected to cover security cooperation, economic partnerships, regional stability, and efforts to strengthen Iraqi state institutions.

The planned White House visit comes at a pivotal moment for Iraq’s new leadership. Al-Zaidi, a businessman turned politician, emerged as a consensus candidate after being nominated by Iraq’s influential Coordination Framework coalition in April 2026. He subsequently received the mandate to form a government following weeks of political negotiations within the country’s ruling blocs.

Relations between Washington and Baghdad have remained strategically important amid ongoing security concerns, regional geopolitical tensions, and efforts to balance Iraq’s ties with both the United States and neighboring Iran. Since Al-Zaidi’s nomination, Trump has publicly expressed strong support for the Iraqi leader, congratulating him and emphasizing the importance of a productive partnership between the two nations.

Analysts view the upcoming meeting as an opportunity for both governments to deepen cooperation on counterterrorism, economic development, energy security, and regional diplomacy. The visit is also expected to reinforce dialogue on Iraq’s efforts to strengthen governance and maintain stability in a region facing evolving political and security dynamics.

The White House meeting will be among the highest-level engagements between the two countries since Al-Zaidi assumed office, underscoring the continued strategic significance of U.S.-Iraq relations in the Middle East.
