In a ceremony marked by historical reverence and cultural significance, the University of Benin’s Vice Chancellor played host to the presentation of the book, The History of an African Community (Ikhiomoto): The History of Onicha-Olona Kingdom by esteemed historian and professional engineer, Prince Ephraim Odiakosa Nwabuokei.

The distinguished event was graciously received by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie, accompanied by principal officers of the university. Present at the reception were Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Christopher Osunbor; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Victor Igbineweka; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Ekenwan Campus), Professor Buniyamin Ayine; and the Registrar, Professor Ademola Bobola.

The Onicha-Olona delegation was led by Chief George Ogoliegbune, the Okenegbe of Onicha-Olona, alongside notable dignitaries including Barrister Chuks Iduh, Prince Agustus Nwabuokei, Prince Madu Akelue, Princess Prisca Uhioma, and Princess Fiidelia, Prince Emmanuel, Prince Hilary. Distinguished guests also joined virtually from the United States, notably Prince (Dr.) Harris Osa Enabulele and Dr. Christian Otado Mbulu.

Chief George Ogoliegbune, in his address, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for the warm reception and for graciously accepting the book. He emphasized that this piece is vital to educating future generations on the profound relationship between the Onicha-Olona and Benin Kingdoms. Chief Ogoliegbune further requested that the book be placed in the university’s library to preserve and disseminate this invaluable historical knowledge.

In his response, Vice Chancellor Professor Edoba Omoregie lauded the delegation for their commitment to preserving and chronicling history. He underscored the significance of the book as critical resources for students and scholars alike, asserting that they will play an essential role in strengthening the historical bonds between the Onicha-Olona and Benin Kingdoms. The Vice Chancellor also congratulated Prince Ephraim Nwabuokei and his team for their monumental achievement in documenting this important chapter of African history.

A symbolic presentation of the books was then made by Chief Ogoliegbune to the Vice Chancellor, further solidifying the partnership between the university and the Onicha-Olona community.

Addressing the gathering virtually, Prince Ephraim Odiakosa Nwabuokei expressed deep appreciation to the Vice Chancellor and the university leadership for hosting the event. He emphasized the urgent need for the documentation of history to bridge the gaps in collective memory, and praised the collaborative spirit of the gathering in bringing this vision to life.

In concluding remarks, Professor Omoregie assured the delegation of the university’s readiness to collaborate with the Onicha-Olona community in future cultural and historical endeavors.

This momentous occasion marked not just the unveiling of an historical event but also a reaffirmation of the enduring ties between the Onicha-Olona Kingdom and the ancient Benin Kingdom. It is also a testament to the power of history in shaping the present and inspiring future generations.
