US-Iran Standoff Escalates: Trump Gives Tehran 48-Hour Ultimatum to Open Strait of Hormuz
The US and Iran are trading threats over the Strait of Hormuz, with President Donald Trump giving Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the vital waterway or face obliteration of its power plants. Iran has responded by threatening to destroy US-linked energy sites in the Middle East and completely shut down the Strait if its power plants are targeted.
The standoff has sent crude oil prices soaring, with North Sea Brent crude trading above $105 a barrel. Iran’s military has warned that it will strike Israel’s power plants, energy, and ICT infrastructure, as well as power plants in regional countries hosting US bases.
The tensions escalated after Iran launched missiles at southern Israeli towns, injuring over 160 people. Israel has vowed to retaliate, and the WHO has warned of an “escalating threat to public health and environmental safety” due to attacks on nuclear sites.
