The village head of Guiwa community, Garba Mohammed, has been arrested along with 13 others for allegedly supporting and shielding armed bandits operating in the Mashegu area of Niger State. The arrest was made during a coordinated raid carried out by police operatives and local vigilante groups

According to the Niger State Police Command’s spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, credible intelligence led to Mohammed’s arrest, and several incriminating items were recovered from his residence during a thorough search. These items included four motorcycles and ten cattle, which were allegedly kept in his custody for the bandits.
Abiodun stated that Mohammed was accused of offering sanctuary and logistical aid to the criminals, using his house as a hideout. The police spokesperson noted that the command has commenced investigation into the case to ascertain the involvement of the village head and the other suspects in banditry activities across the region.
The police and vigilante groups had conducted clearance operations in some identified kidnappers’ hideouts in Mashegu Local Government Area, including the Magaman-Daji forest and surrounding areas, a day prior to the arrest. Although most of the suspected kidnappers fled the scene, others were believed to have escaped with gunshot injuries.
The police command has vowed to thoroughly investigate the case and bring the perpetrators to justice. The arrest of the village head and the other suspects is a significant development in the efforts to combat banditry and kidnapping in the region.
The Niger State Police Command’s operation is part of a broader effort to tackle the growing menace of banditry and kidnapping in the region. The command’s proactive approach and collaboration with local vigilante groups have yielded positive results, and the investigation is ongoing to ensure that those involved in these crimes are held accountable.
