Former Georgian president and current Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili have been accused of murder by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
*Zelenskyy was quoted by Interfax-Ukraine during a news conference he had in Kyiv with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen.
Zelenskyy said that photographs depicting Saakashvili’s present condition were shown to him.
*Quote: “Before, he served as Georgia’s president. As in, Mikheil Saakashvili. Davyd Arakhamiia, an M.P., provided me with those. Here, have a look at how he is currently looking.”
“His death is being ordered by the Georgian government today, I suppose. They poisoned him, and he’s dying a slow, painful death.”
*Background:
Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia’s ex-president, appeared via video chat at a court hearing on February 1. He looked terrible.
Sakaashvili’s Georgian court is currently considering delaying his incarceration.
Saakashvili’s condition continues to deteriorate, and he is currently being cared for in the critical care unit of Vivamedi Hospital in Tbilisi.
In May, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reversed his predecessor Petro Poroshenko’s ruling and reinstated Saakashvili’s Ukrainian citizenship.
Saakashvili, Georgia’s former leader, was arrested in October 2021 and has remained in prison ever since. His time in office (2004–2007 and 2008–2013) is being seen through a lens of allegations of power abuse by the Georgian government.
