White House Security Scare: Gunman Killed in Shootout Near Presidential Complex as Trump Escapes Harm
A gunman was shot dead by United States Secret Service officers after opening fire near the White House security perimeter in Washington, D.C., triggering a major security lockdown and renewed concerns over threats targeting high-profile government institutions.
According to U.S. authorities, the shooting occurred on Saturday evening near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to a security checkpoint outside the White House complex. Officials said the suspect reportedly pulled a firearm from a bag and began shooting at officers stationed at the checkpoint before agents returned fire.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A bystander was also struck during the exchange of gunfire, although investigators have not yet confirmed whether the civilian was hit by bullets fired by the suspect or responding officers. No Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident.
U.S. President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House at the time of the shooting but was not harmed. The White House complex was briefly placed under lockdown as security agents secured the area and directed journalists and staff members to shelter indoors.
Secret Service Communications Chief Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that the suspect initiated the attack by firing at officers positioned along the presidential security perimeter. Federal investigators, including the FBI, have since launched an inquiry into the incident and the suspect’s possible motives.
Several U.S. media outlets reported that the suspect had previously come to the attention of law enforcement authorities over earlier incidents linked to the White House area. Reports from court records cited by major American newspapers indicated the individual had allegedly attempted unauthorized access to the White House complex in 2025 and had reportedly been subject to a stay-away order.
Eyewitnesses and journalists near the scene described hearing multiple rounds of gunfire, with some estimating that between 20 and 30 shots were exchanged during the confrontation. Video footage circulating on social media showed armed officers rapidly moving to secure the area while emergency responders treated the wounded.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding U.S. political institutions following several recent threats and violent incidents near federal buildings in Washington. Analysts say the latest shooting is likely to intensify ongoing debates around presidential security, public safety, and political violence in the United States.
