Woman Arraigned for Failing to Marry After Receiving N2.8m from Suitor

A 25-year-old tailor, Victoria Effiong, appeared before a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Iba, accused of accepting N2.8 million from a suitor under the pretense of agreeing to marry him, but later refusing to do so. Effiong faces charges of breach of peace, cheating, and obtaining by false pretenses.

According to the police, the incident took place on September 25, 2024, at Ajanaku Street, Isashi. Effiong allegedly accepted various gifts from the complainant, Dominic Asuquo, including an iPhone, clothing, a wristwatch, shoes, and cash, amounting to N2.8 million. During their relationship, Asuquo reportedly provided her with daily feeding money and other financial support.

Tensions escalated when Asuquo discovered that Effiong was planning to marry another man, despite having introduced him to her parents earlier. Effiong, however, claimed Asuquo knew she was seeing someone else and denied any formal engagement with him.

Effiong pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted her bail of N200,000, with two sureties required. The case has been adjourned to November 28, 2024, for further mention.
