In the wake of a devastating terrorist attack in Mafa village, located in the Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, Nigeria, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has announced the deployment of additional military personnel to the region. This decision follows a tragic incident that occurred on Sunday when armed insurgents launched a coordinated assault, resulting in the deaths of at least 34 villagers and the destruction of numerous homes.

The news of the attack has sent shockwaves throughout the community and prompted a strong response from the Northern State Governors’ Forum, which has condemned the violence and called for immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice. The forum’s chairman, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State, described the assault as a senseless act of brutality that has caused immense pain to the families and communities affected. He emphasized the need for security agencies to intensify their efforts to ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and held accountable.
In a meeting on Wednesday, General Musa received Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, who had traveled to Abuja to seek military support following the massacre. During their discussion, Governor Buni expressed his deep concern over the escalating frequency of terrorist incursions into Yobe State, particularly along its borders, where vulnerable communities have become easy targets for attacks. He reported that while there had been improvements in security across the state, recent events have highlighted the urgent need to address the ongoing threat posed by insurgents.
“Three days ago, we witnessed a tragic attack on Mafa, a border village with Borno State, and just a few days prior, there was another attack in Geidam, a community along the Niger Republic border,” Buni stated. He emphasized the importance of finding a lasting solution to the violence that has plagued border communities, which have suffered devastating losses in recent months.
In response to these concerns, General Musa assured Governor Buni that the military would implement innovative strategies to enhance security in the region. He reiterated the importance of collaboration between the armed forces and local communities to effectively combat terrorism and safeguard the lives and properties of citizens. “We will deploy additional personnel and new strategies to end the movements and attacks by criminal elements in identified areas,” he affirmed.
The recent attack on Mafa village involved armed militants reportedly arriving on over 50 motorcycles, leading to a scene of chaos and destruction. Eyewitnesses have suggested that the death toll may exceed 100, although official reports from the Yobe State government have confirmed 34 fatalities. The victims were subsequently buried in a mass grave on Tuesday in Babangida, the headquarters of the Tarmuwa Local Government Area, after a search-and-rescue operation led by the Nigerian Army, with the support of local vigilantes.
The Yobe State Police Command has confirmed the attack, with spokesperson Dungus Abdulkarim noting that insurgents left behind fliers inscribed in Arabic, indicating the ideological motivations behind the violence. This incident has further highlighted the grim reality of ongoing insecurity in northeastern Nigeria, where communities continue to live under the constant threat of violence from insurgents.
The Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Nigeria has also condemned the attack, labeling it a treacherous act and reiterating its firm stance against violence, terrorism, and extremism. In a statement posted on social media, the embassy expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and to the Nigerian government, emphasizing the need for collective action against such atrocities.
As the situation unfolds, the Northern State Governors’ Forum remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and security in the region.
The recent violence in Yobe State underscores the urgent need for coordinated action among security agencies, local governments, and communities to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of citizens.
The hope is that with increased military presence and collaborative strategies, the tide of violence can be turned, allowing for a more secure future for the people of Yobe State and the broader northern region of Nigeria.
