In a significant move aimed at enhancing educational opportunities in Zamfara State, Governor Dauda Lawal has announced the provision of scholarships for 30 exceptionally talented students from the region. This initiative will see these students attend the prestigious Federal Government Academy located in Suleja. The announcement was made during a reception at the Government House, where the governor welcomed the scholarship recipients alongside members of the Muhammad Danbaba Centre for Women and Youth Development.

According to a statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, the Muhammad Danbaba Centre has played an instrumental role in elevating Zamfara State to the forefront of educational achievement within Northern Nigeria. Notably, the state emerged as the top-performing Northern State in the recent National Examination Council (NECO) entrance exams for gifted students. The statement highlighted that many of the high achievers hailed from public schools, underscoring the potential of students in the state.

Governor Lawal took the opportunity to congratulate both the students and their families for their commendable accomplishments. He remarked, “Your remarkable performance was a positive indication that our administration’s declaration of an emergency in the educational sector was not in vain.” This statement reflects the governor’s commitment to addressing the long-standing educational challenges that have plagued Zamfara in the past.

The governor went on to express his frustration with the historical underperformance of the state in education, stating, “In the past, Zamfara was consistently at the bottom regarding education in Nigeria. This is why I declared a state of emergency in the educational sector last year.” His administration is currently undertaking a comprehensive renovation of over 300 fully equipped schools across all 14 local government areas in the state. Furthermore, efforts are being made to enhance the training of teachers to improve the overall quality of public school education.Zamfara Governor Launches Scholarship Initiative for Gifted Students

Drawing from his own educational experiences, Governor Lawal shared a personal story that highlighted the importance of public schooling. He mentioned that he was the only child in his family to attend local LEA schools, as he was raised by his grandparents in Katsina. After completing primary school, he continued his education at Government Secondary School, Kachia, while his siblings attended more prestigious institutions. This narrative illustrates the governor’s dedication to improving public education and ensuring that all children have access to quality schooling.

In a moment of excitement, Lawal announced the full scholarship for the 30 gifted students, stating, “No parents will have to pay anything, as the scholarship will cover all expenses.” He emphasized that this initiative is just the beginning, with plans to extend similar support to more students in the future.

The event also included remarks from Sarkin Malami, the Chairman of the Muhammad Danbaba Centre for Women and Youth Development. He discussed the centre’s activities and suggested various strategies for the government to enhance its operations, emphasizing the importance of continued investment in youth development and education.

This scholarship initiative by Governor Dauda Lawal represents a proactive step toward transforming the educational landscape in Zamfara State, aiming to nurture and support the next generation of leaders and innovators. The commitment to investing in the talents of young people is a promising sign of progress for the state’s educational system and its future.
