In a significant legal development on December 7, 2023, the Zamfara State High Court delivered a verdict that Anas Dahiru would face the death penalty by hanging for the murder of his friend over a sum of N100.
The accused, Dahiru, had been brought to court in June 2017 on charges of fatally stabbing Shamu Ibrahim.
Presiding over the case, Justice Mukhtar Yusha’u pronounced the judgment after carefully considering arguments from both sides. Citing Section 221 of the Penal Code, the judge determined that Dahiru’s actions warranted the severe penalty of death by hanging.
In a related case heard during the same proceedings, Sadiqu Abubakar was convicted for attempted armed robbery in Bungudu Local Government Area of the state. Abubakar had attacked a businessman in Runji village of Bungudu LGA. However, the targeted businessman managed to apprehend the armed robber, subsequently turning him over to the police. In this instance, Justice Yusha’u sentenced Abubakar to life imprisonment, again invoking Section 221 of the Penal Code.
It is essential to share this legal development as it sheds light on the judicial decisions made in Zamfara State. The court’s decisions, though severe, reflect the gravity of the offenses committed.
