The Lagos State Taskforce announced that it will prosecute 28 individuals arrested for extorting and terrorizing motorists in various parts of the city. These miscreants, known for demanding money from drivers whose vehicles break down on the highway, were apprehended during a raid in areas including Mile 2, Alaba Rago, FESTAC, and Apapa.
The agency’s spokesperson explained that these individuals, referred to as the ‘Omotaku’ group, have been exploiting motorists under the guise of collecting so-called “breakdown money.” Their activities have caused significant distress to drivers, forcing them to pay large sums of money.
The Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, expressed relief at the arrests, stating that the operation was an important step in protecting residents and motorists. He assured that the arrested individuals would be swiftly prosecuted and emphasized the agency’s ongoing efforts to eliminate similar criminal activities in the state.
He urged the public to report any suspicious behavior in their areas, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the community and law enforcement in maintaining safety across Lagos.
In addition, the agency recently seized 82 motorcycles in areas where commercial motorbikes are banned, reinforcing its commitment to keeping Lagos roads safe and accessible.
