Chetachi Mbadinuju, his eldest son, made the announcement on Tuesday”We announce the demise of our father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and companion, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, former governor of Anambra State and elder statesman, with sorrowful hearts but profound thankfulness to God for a life well lived,” he added in the statement”
The former governor, according to Mr Chetachi, a lawyer, “died away peacefully” at the National Hospital Abuja on Tuesday morning following a short illness.
The patriarch, he added, had passed away at the age of 78.

“We pray for God’s grace and compassion onto him and those left to grieve him,” he said.
The family will make an announcement about his funeral services, he added.
From May 29, 1999, till his death on May 29, 2003, the late Mbadinuju led Anambra State as governor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Mr Mbadinuju worked as a personal assistant for former Nigerian Head of State Shehu Shagari from 1980 to 1983, after having done the same for former Enugu State governor Jim Nwobodo from 1979 to 1980.
