Lionel Messi was crowned the world’s best player for an unprecedented eighth time at the Ballon d’Or ceremony held on Monday night, 30th October 2023, in Paris, France. The event featured a thrilling performance by Nigeria’s Afrobeat singer, Rema.
The Inter Miami and Argentina superstar fended off competition from Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe to secure his record eighth Ballon d’Or award, three more than any other player.
He accomplished this historic feat following a remarkable season with PSG, tallying 20 goals and 21 assists to claim the French Ligue 1 title.
Additionally, he captained Argentina to their first World Cup victory in 36 years in Qatar last December, scoring seven goals and providing three assists, including a memorable brace and a decisive contribution in the penalty shootout during an extraordinary final against France.
Messi received the Man of the Match award and was named the Player of the Tournament.
During his acceptance speech, Messi expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you very much to my national teammates for what we were able to achieve with the national team.
The entire group, the coaching staff, everyone involved. I’m delighted to be here once more to enjoy this moment once again.”
In other categories, Real Madrid’s former Dortmund prodigy, Jude Bellingham, claimed the Kopa Trophy (Golden Boy award) as the best young player under the age of 21.
Erling Haaland was honoured with the Striker of the Year award, while Vinicius Jr. received the Socrates award.
Messi also extended his congratulations to his fellow nominees, stating, “Hats off to Kylian [Mbappe], Erling, Kevin. You guys are very young and have already achieved so much; there’s plenty of time left.”
Overall, it was a night to remember for Messi and Argentina. However, the question lingers: could this be the last we’ll see from the football icon?
