The Lagos State Government has sealed the Oke-Afa market in Isolo and the Katangua market in Abule Egba for violating waste disposal regulations and engaging in unhygienic practices.
The closure of the markets is aimed at curbing environmental health concerns. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that the government’s zero tolerance for waste initiative is still in effect, and any market or facility found engaging in reckless waste disposal will face sanctions. The markets will remain sealed until stringent hygiene and waste disposal measures are implemented and maintained

The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, urged market executives to mobilize their members to comply with waste management regulations and maintain hygienic habits. He warned that the zero-tolerance initiative will be pursued more vigorously, and markets that refuse to adopt proper waste disposal practices will be sanctioned. LAWMA is dedicated to ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment and calls for cooperation from all stakeholders, including market operators and traders.
