In 2024, Edo women who have expressed their desire for the highest position in the state are prepared to compete on equal terms with their male counterparts as the gubernatorial election draws near. These women are determined and have pledged to oppose any type of gender-based political violence intended to suppress them or their ambitions.

Since 1999, Edo State has exclusively had male governors and deputy governors, with no women holding these positions. As a result, women have had to compete for political appointments. Despite the implementation of a 35 per cent affirmative action policy to appoint women to political offices, men continue to exert predominant influence in the political sphere.

An examination of the political chronicles of Edo State since 1999 reveals that Lucky Igbinedion held the position of governor, while Chief Mike Ogiadomhe served as the deputy governor. During the tenure of Prof Osariemen Osunbor as governor from 2007-2008, his deputy was Chief Lucky Imasuen, a male individual. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole served as governor from 2008 to 2016, with Rt.—Hon. Pius Odubu as his deputy governor. Since 2016, Governor Godwin Obaseki has been serving with Deputy Governor Rt. Hn. Philip Shaibu and there are no indications of any changes in their positions till the administration concludes on November 11, 2024.

Among the current pool of candidates, there are a total of 68 individuals vying for political office. Specifically, there is one candidate from the PDP, one from the APC, and three from the Labour Party.

Angela Aburime-Asom, a medical practitioner, originates from the Edo Central Senatorial District, which is highly favoured by many influential individuals to produce the upcoming governor of the state.

Many stakeholders have strongly advocated for all political parties in the state to allocate their ticketstotral, to ensure parity and fairness. Her ambition, within the framework of the Labour Party, appears to have garnered support from both within and outside the party. Following her endorsement by the Labour Party candidate, she expressed anonymous gratitude to those who backed her possession of the Labour Party delegate form.

Officially handing the form to Dr Angela Aburime-Asom in the photo is the National Organizing Secretary Chief Clement Ojukwu.

saying: In the vast landscape of Nigerian politics, some individuals shine brightly, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of the people. One such individual is Professor Tanko Yenusa, a name that resonates with many as the LP National Spokesperson and Media Guru. Renowned for his ability to weave captivating tales of Nigeria’s perils, as well as moments of love and joy, Professor Tanko Yenusa is truly a de-tribalized Nigerian. If ever allowed to hear him speak, it is an experience that should not be missed.

Celebrating the Remarkable Individuals Behind Nigeria's Labour Party: A Tribute to Their Dedication and Sacrifice
Words possess the power to shape narratives, inspire change, and unite people. Professor Tanko Yenusa is a master of this craft, effortlessly painting a vivid picture of Nigeria’s story with each breath he takes. His ability to convey the struggles and triumphs of the nation in a single exhale is a testament to his artistry and passion for his country. Through his words, he not only educates and enlightens but also instils a sense of hope and unity among listeners.

In the realm of Nigerian politics, some unsung heroes work tirelessly behind the scenes, dedicating their lives to the betterment of their party and the people it represents. One such hero is Mr. Alfred Okundaye, an angel and supporter of the Labour Party. His unwavering commitment to the cause is a testament to his selflessness and belief in the party’s values. Mr. Okundaye’s presence, with his purple attire adorned with a white stripe, serves as a symbol of his unwavering support and dedication.

Adjacent to Mr Okundaye stands Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the Labour Party’s National Secretary. Alhaji Ibrahim’s brilliance and intellect are awe-inspiring. His depth of knowledge and analytical prowess make him an invaluable asset to the party. It is through his strategic thinking and visionary leadership that the Labour Party continues to thrive and make significant strides in the political arena.

To the left of the author stands Mrs. Dudu Manuga, the Labour Party’s National Woman Leader. Her warm embrace and genuine enthusiasm upon welcoming a fellow female serve as a testament to her dedication to fostering inclusivity within the party. Mrs Manuga’s passion for empowering women and ensuring their voices are heard is truly commendable. Her presence brings a sense of unity and solidarity, inspiring women across Nigeria to actively participate in the political landscape.

A Platform for the People:
It is essential to acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices made by these remarkable individuals. Despite the demanding nature of their roles, they receive minimal financial compensation and lack benefits such as health insurance. Yet, they persist in their mission to provide everyday Nigerians with a platform to voice their concerns and aspirations. These individuals risk their well-being daily, facing challenges and uncertainties head-on, all for the sake of giving the people a voice.

A Call for Respect and Appreciation:
As we reflect on the dedication and sacrifice of Professor Tanko Yenusa, Mr. Alfred Okundaye, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and countless others within the Labour Party, it is crucial that we show them the respect and appreciation they deserve. Let us recognize the immense value they bring to Nigerian politics and the profound impact they have on shaping the nation’s future.
