A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people and injuring over 1,000 others. The earthquake caused significant damage to numerous buildings and triggered tsunami warnings that extended to Japan and the Philippines before being lifted.US offers help as nine die, 1,000 injured in Taiwan earthquake

The quake caused massive landslides, cutting off access to certain areas and trapping dozens of people, particularly in tunnels that traverse the island’s mountainous terrain. While officials have warned of potential aftershocks in the coming days, strict building regulations and widespread disaster awareness among the public have helped prevent a major catastrophe.

Despite the destruction caused by the earthquake, there were fortunate instances where lives were spared. For example, a printing press warehouse near the capital collapsed, but all 50 people inside were rescued. Many homes experienced fallen decorations, but residents remained safe.

Wu Chien-fu, the director of Taipei’s Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Centre, stated that this earthquake was the strongest to hit the island since a 7.6-magnitude quake in which claimed the lives of approximately 2,400 people.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, struck south of Taiwan’s Hualien City, according to the United States Geological Survey. Three hikers were crushed to death by boulders dislodged by the quake, while three others died in their vehicles when rocks from the hillsides struck them. An additional fatality occurred at a quarry.

The United States has expressed its willingness to assist Taiwan in the aftermath of the earthquake. The White House stated that it is ready to provide any necessary aid, while also monitoring the potential impact on Japan.
