A visitation panel to Taraba State University has revealed financial irregularities amounting to N3.5 billion in the institution. The panel, chaired by Prof. Josiah Sabo-Kente, stated that the university had been operating with a poor accounting system since its establishment in 2008 and below the minimum standards set by the National Universities Commission. The panel recommended a complete overhaul of the university system.
The governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, had constituted the panel to identify the challenges facing the institution and facilitate its improvement in line with the government’s free education policy. The panel’s findings indicated significant discrepancies and irregularities in the university’s financial management between 2010 and 2023. It also highlighted the frequent turnover in the appointment of the governing council chairman and the lack of a university administration, which negatively affected the institution. The panel further pointed out the shortage of academic staff, with only 36 professors, 45 readers, and 59 senior lecturers responsible for 53 programs. The report also addressed infrastructural challenges, including lighting, water shortage, and insufficient medical facilities. Immediate action was recommended to address these issues.
