In a shocking incident, panic ensued at No 161 Beverly Hills Estate, GRA in Onitsha, Anambra State, when a 40-foot truck carrying cement crashed into a residential building. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, caused significant damage to the property and nearby vehicles, but fortunately, no lives were lost.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the truck lost control while navigating the hilly road, leading to the collision with the building. It was reported that the driver had ignored warnings from the Chief Security Officer of the estate, who had cautioned against heavy-duty vehicles entering the area due to its topographic nature.
A resident of the estate, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted the events, stating that despite the warnings, the driver insisted on proceeding to the uncompleted building where the cement was to be off-loaded. As the vehicle tried to negotiate its way, the weight of the cement caused it to descend the hill uncontrollably, resulting in the collision with the residential building. The impact damaged two luxury cars, the perimeter fence gate, walls, and pillars of the house.
The landlord of the affected property, Uche Adoga, a retired civil servant, expressed his shock and recounted how his family members were upstairs in the duplex when the incident occurred. Adoga revealed that his newly purchased car and a Venzer jeep were among the vehicles damaged by the truck. He also mentioned that the driver, who was making calls at the time of the incident, tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by sympathizers and landlords.
The driver is currently being detained at the 3’3 police station, while the truck has been towed to the same location with the assistance of the landlords. Adoga expressed frustration with the lack of concern shown by the principal of the driver, who has yet to assess the extent of the damage or discuss compensation with him and his family.
Authorities have confirmed the detention of the driver, although further details were not disclosed. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and guidelines, especially in residential areas.
