Commuters and motorists faced significant delays and frustration on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday due to multiple accidents involving two trucks. The incidents resulted in further traffic congestion on the already busy road, causing inconvenience for road users.
On Saturday, both ends of the expressway were heavily affected by traffic, and the situation worsened on Sunday, which was Eid day. One truck overturned on the Otedola Bridge area of the expressway, spilling its contents onto the road. Another truck loaded with soft drinks fell along the Long Bridge section. These accidents led to blocked sections of the expressway, forcing stranded passengers to disembark from their vehicles and walk long distances to bypass the affected areas.
As a result of the gridlock, commuters experienced a fare increase from Berger Bus Stop to Mowe, Ibafo, and Arepo, with prices rising from the usual N400 to N1000. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) worked diligently to tow the fallen trucks and restore traffic flow. However, frustrated commuters reported spending hours in traffic, with some expressing concern about the recurring gridlock on the expressway.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority provided an update on the situation, stating that the Otedola Bridge area was partially closed to allow for the trans-loading of the truck’s contents. Motorists were advised to drive from Secretariat to link CMS road, connect Otedola, and continue their journey towards Berger.
In a conversation with the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector of the FRSC attributed the truck’s fall on the Long Bridge section to overloading and mechanical fault. Thankfully, no casualties or injuries were reported in either incident.
Road users who were interviewed expressed their frustration and called on the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the traffic situation, particularly on the Long Bridge section. They emphasized the impact the gridlock had on their well-being and urged authorities to address the issue to prevent future occurrences.
The FRSC advised motorists to exercise caution while driving on the expressway, especially during the festive period, and to avoid speeding. They assured road users that they were working to restore normalcy to the road.
The recurring traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains a concern for commuters and motorists. Efforts must be made to address the underlying issues and implement effective traffic management strategies to alleviate the inconvenience and ensure a smoother travel experience for all.
