In a devastating incident, a fatal road crash occurred near the Green Energy Oil and Gas Station by Eke Awgbu along the Agulu-Awgbu Road in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the loss of six lives. The crash, which took place on July 10 at approximately 10 am, involved three vehicles, including a truck, a tricycle, and motorcycles.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, there were a total of 11 individuals involved in the crash, including nine male adults and two female adults. Five male adults and one female adult sustained injuries of varying degrees, while four male adults and two female adults tragically lost their lives.
The crash was reportedly caused by a brake failure on the part of the truck driver, who lost control of the vehicle and collided with the other vehicles at a checkpoint. Some eyewitnesses also attributed the crash to the presence of a checkpoint mounted by security operatives and state revenue service agents along the busy road.
The injured victims were promptly rushed by passersby to the Referral Health Centre in Awgbu, while the deceased were taken to St Joseph’s Mortuary in Adazi Ani. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident and stated that excessive speed and brake failure were the probable causes of the crash.
The FRSC rescue team managed the traffic and cleared the obstruction caused by the crash. Two of the injured victims were referred to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Awka, while another two were referred to Regina Hospital in Awka. Unfortunately, one adult female victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Regina Hospital, and one adult male victim lost his life at Referral Hospital in Awgbu.
The FRSC Sector Commander for Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and sent prayers to the injured individuals. He urged motorists to maintain safe speeds and adhere to speed limits to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service denied allegations that their agents were responsible for the road crash. According to the service, the accident was caused by the truck driver’s failure to control the vehicle properly when the brakes failed on the sloping road.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for all road users to exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations. The FRSC and other relevant authorities continue to work tirelessly to enhance road safety measures and prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
