Govt warns against repeat of #ENDSARS experience

The Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, has issued a warning to residents, urging them to refrain from engaging in violent protests that could result in the destruction of public property, similar to what occurred during the #EndSARS protests in 2020. Salu-Hundeyin made this statement during a routine security meeting with the secretaries to the local governments at the state secretariat in Alausa, Lagos.

During the #EndSARS protests in 2020, which called for the disbandment of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), numerous public properties, including a Bus Rapid Transit terminal, were set on fire by hoodlums, resulting in loss of lives.

In light of the upcoming protest scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024, and run until August 10, titled “End Bad Governance in Nigeria,” aimed at drawing the attention of the Federal Government to the challenges faced by citizens due to the rising cost of living and staple foods, Salu-Hundeyin emphasized that while Nigerians have the right to express themselves through peaceful protests, they should avoid engaging in violent demonstrations that could disrupt the peace and development the state of Lagos has been experiencing.

Salu-Hundeyin highlighted the achievements of the Lagos State Government, such as the prompt payment of pensions to retirees and the ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Ilera Eko, the New Insurance Medical Schemes, the university, and the blue line rail, among others. She emphasized the need to protect the progress being made and to prevent a repeat of the destruction witnessed during the previous protests.

Akeem Dauda, the chairman of Scribe 57 and Ikeja SLG, also expressed concerns about the planned protest, deeming it unnecessary. He stated that the government’s efforts, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, over the past year have been commendable, and it is essential to educate the public about the reasons why a protest in Lagos is unnecessary. Local government officials will engage with their communities to discourage participation in the protest and advocate for the protection of the current state of the country.Govt warns against repeat of #ENDSARS experience

It is important to note that while peaceful protests are a legitimate means for citizens to express their grievances, the government and residents of Lagos State are urging protesters to exercise their rights responsibly and peacefully, without resorting to violence or causing harm to public property.
