On August 2, 2024, the Nigerian Army addressed a viral video that stirred public concern over the alleged poor feeding of soldiers stationed in Yobe State. The video featured an individual who claimed that troops in Kanama were receiving inadequate meals, highlighting a small portion of semovita (semo) he was served. In response to the growing outcry, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, issued a statement clarifying the situation. He emphasized that the individual in the video was not a member of the military, and the Army promptly initiated an investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the claims made in the video.
The investigation, commanded by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, aimed to verify the authenticity of the allegations and to address any issues related to the welfare of the soldiers. Major General Nwachukwu affirmed that the findings indicated that the person filming the video was a police officer assigned to the troops in Geidam, and not a soldier from the 159 Battalion, as was suggested. He stated, “No personnel in that area were served with substandard meals.”
Further inquiry revealed that the police officer recorded and shared the video with purported ulterior motives, the specifics of which are still under investigation. Nwachukwu reassured the public that the Nigerian Army prioritizes the welfare of its personnel, particularly those deployed in challenging environments. He stated, “The leadership of the Nigerian Army places a premium on the welfare and well-being of troops and their families to ensure that they are adequately rewarded and motivated.”
The Army’s commitment to the well-being of its soldiers is underscored by various welfare initiatives implemented under the guidance of the Chief of Army Staff. These measures include:
– An increase in the Ration Cash Allowance for personnel.
– Prompt medical evacuations for soldiers injured in action, with provisions for both local and foreign treatments.
– The resumption of payments for the backlog of the Group Life Insurance Scheme, which had been pending since 2012.
– An Affordable House Ownership Option, where the Army covers approximately 60% of the cost for soldiers.
– Activation of a Personnel Insurance Scheme for soldiers who sustain injuries during combat operations.
Additionally, the Nigerian Army is undergoing significant renovations and enhancements of its medical facilities, including the Nigerian Army Reference Hospitals, to ensure the health and well-being of both personnel and their families. The Army is also committed to improving living conditions by renovating old accommodations and constructing new housing in various cantonments and barracks.
The public response to the viral video has highlighted the importance of accurate information regarding the conditions faced by military personnel. As the investigation into the incident continues, the Nigerian Army remains focused on ensuring the welfare of its troops and addressing any concerns that arise.
In conclusion, the Nigerian Army’s swift action in investigating the viral claims reflects its commitment to transparency and the well-being of its soldiers. The Army’s ongoing efforts to enhance the living conditions and support systems for its personnel demonstrate a dedication to maintaining morale and ensuring that those serving on the front lines are properly cared for.
