Tragic Road Accident Claims 11 Lives in Abia State

On the night of August 15, 2024, a devastating road traffic accident occurred at Arungwa Village along the Port Harcourt-Enugu Expressway, resulting in the tragic loss of 11 lives. The incident involved a Nissan Caravan commercial bus, which was transporting 19 passengers, and a HOWO commercial truck.

According to Ngozi Ezeoma, the Abia State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the collision transpired when the white Nissan Caravan, bearing the registration number SSM 320 ZR, collided with the yellow HOWO truck, registered as T2828LA. The bus was carrying a total of 19 individuals, comprising eight male adults and eleven female adults, who were en route to Enugu.

Within five minutes of receiving the notification about the crash, a combined rescue team from the FRSC’s Aba Unit Commands (RS 9.31 and RS 9.32) arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. The immediate response underscores the commitment of the FRSC to address emergencies and assist victims promptly.

Initial reports indicated that the collision resulted in injuries to ten individuals, consisting of five male adults and five female adults. Unfortunately, nine individuals—four male adults and five female adults—were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured victims were swiftly transported to a local hospital in Aba for medical treatment, while the deceased were taken to the mortuary.

As the situation unfolded, further developments were reported during a follow-up at the hospital. It was revealed that, later that evening, one male adult and one female adult succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to eleven—five male adults and six female adults. Additionally, the condition of one of the victims necessitated a referral to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia for more specialized care.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the FRSC indicated that excessive speed was a contributing factor to the crash. However, further inquiries are underway, and updates will be provided once the FRSC Crash Investigators conclude their findings.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers on Nigerian roads and highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures. As families mourn their loved ones, the community is left grappling with the consequences of road traffic crashes, which continue to pose significant risks to public safety.
