In a significant move aimed at modernizing vehicle management and improving road safety, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has unveiled the Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR), an innovative system designed to streamline vehicle information verification and handling. This initiative is part of the NPF’s broader strategy to enhance policing efficiency and safety on the roads.

The announcement was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who utilized social media platforms to share details about the benefits and functionalities of the E-CMR system. Under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun, this initiative seeks to revolutionize how vehicle-related information is accessed and processed, making it easier for both law enforcement and vehicle owners.
One of the standout features of the E-CMR is its digital registration process, allowing vehicle owners to register their vehicles online. This system not only facilitates quick access to vehicle information but also provides a rapid response mechanism in emergencies. For instance, if a vehicle registered with the E-CMR is stolen, the owner can instantly flag it as stolen through their online profile. The system then alerts police officers nationwide in real-time, significantly increasing the chances of swift recovery.
Adejobi emphasized the removal of traditional paperwork as another major advantage of the E-CMR. He stated, “No more stopping to check papers—our officers are equipped with cutting-edge technology to verify documents in real-time.” This advancement means that vehicle owners no longer need to carry physical documents, as all relevant information can be accessed digitally. The convenience of this system allows for a quicker, easier, and more secure handling of vehicle-related matters.
The introduction of the E-CMR aligns with previous initiatives aimed at digitizing the motor vehicle registration system in Nigeria. In July 2024, the Inspector-General of Police mandated the enforcement of this digital registry, emphasizing its role in modernizing the country’s safety and security framework. The police anticipate that the E-CMR will not only facilitate smoother vehicle ownership transactions but will also enhance the overall security of the vehicle management process.
In addition to improving vehicle registration and verification, the E-CMR is expected to streamline various vehicle-related services, including ownership transfers, license renewals, and updates to engine or chassis details. Adejobi noted that this system will also play a crucial role in preventing the sale of stolen vehicles, thereby bolstering recovery efforts.
The introduction of the E-CMR represents a forward-thinking approach by the Nigeria Police Force, aiming to leverage technology to foster a safer and more efficient environment for vehicle management. As the system becomes operational, it is hoped that it will significantly reduce the administrative burdens associated with vehicle ownership and enhance the overall reliability of the police in maintaining order on the nation’s roads.
This initiative marks a promising step toward modernizing law enforcement and enhancing public safety in Nigeria, reflecting a commitment to embracing technology for the betterment of society.
