A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced five women to two years in prison each for the illegal importation of 6.96 kilograms of a potent cannabis strain known as “Ghana loud.”
The women, identified as Basirat Olarigbibe, Fatima Garuba, Amudalat Adekunle, Oloye Arafat Awele, and Ademola Bola, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of conspiracy and unlawful importation.
They were arrested on August 21, 2024, at the Seme Border in Badagry, Lagos State. During their apprehension, Olarigbibe was found with 1.54 kilograms of the substance, while Garuba and Adekunle had 1.47 kilograms and 1.52 kilograms, respectively. Awele and Bola were caught with 1.53 kilograms and 900 grams.
The judge noted that the women’s offenses violated the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act. Despite their guilty pleas, their defense attorney requested leniency, highlighting that two of the women were widows and first-time offenders.
After considering their circumstances, the judge sentenced each woman to two years in prison, allowing for the option of a N500,000 fine and 100 hours of community service instead of incarceration.
