A 17-year-old female student from Imo State University, Jesse Chidebere, has been arrested by police for falsely reporting her abduction and death.
The police spokesperson stated that her hoax caused significant distress to both her family and the university community. Authorities received a distress call last Saturday reporting Chidebere missing, along with a message from her WhatsApp account claiming she had been kidnapped and killed, urging her family to verify the situation at the Orji Police Station.
In response, police launched a search and discovered on Sunday that Chidebere was alive and had fabricated the entire story as a prank. An investigation is underway to determine her motives, and she will face prosecution for her actions.
The Commissioner of Police for Imo State expressed concern over such irresponsible behavior, highlighting the waste of resources and public panic it caused. He urged parents to caution their children against engaging in dangerous pranks and spreading misinformation. The police command remains committed to addressing such issues to ensure public safety.
