On November 15, 2024, the Super Eagles of Nigeria solidified their position at the top of Group D in the qualification series for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by playing to a 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. This crucial match marked a significant moment in Nigeria’s campaign, ensuring their qualification for the tournament set to take place in Morocco.
The match began on a challenging note for Nigeria, as they conceded the first goal in the 16th minute. Benin’s defender, Mohamed Tijani, capitalized on a well-executed corner kick, heading the ball past Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Despite this early setback, Nigeria maintained composure and sought to regain control of the game.
Victor Osimhen, the Napoli striker currently on loan, proved to be a pivotal player for the Super Eagles. After missing a golden opportunity earlier in the match, where he directed a header wide from a promising cross by Bruno Onyemaechi, Osimhen redeemed himself in the closing minutes. In the 81st minute, he found the back of the net with a powerful header, leveling the score and securing a vital point for Nigeria.
The draw brought Nigeria’s total points in the group to an unassailable 11, confirming their advancement to the tournament. This outcome was further solidified by Libya’s narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda in a concurrent match, which eliminated Rwanda’s chances of qualification and underscored Nigeria’s dominant position in Group D.
Despite the draw, Nigeria’s performance against the Cheetahs was not without its challenges. The Super Eagles appeared vulnerable at times, with Benin pressing for a second goal that they narrowly missed. Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr, now leading the Benin team, aimed to exploit any weaknesses in Nigeria’s defense, creating a tense atmosphere throughout the match.
Looking ahead, Nigeria’s final qualifying match will be against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Monday. While Nigeria has already secured their place in the tournament, Rwanda will be eager to cause an upset and fight for the remaining qualification spot. Simultaneously, Benin will face Libya, as the teams jostle for position in the group standings.Nigeria Secures Top Spot in AFCON 2025 Group D with Draw Against Benin Republic
As the Super Eagles prepare for their final match, fans are hopeful for a strong performance that will not only showcase Nigeria’s talent but also bolster their pride as they head into the AFCON tournament. With the stakes high and the competition fierce, the upcoming match promises to be an exciting conclusion to the qualification series.
