The Enugu State Police Command has announced plans to prosecute officers from the Awkunanaw Police Station, Garriki, accused of extorting ₦1 million from a traveller.
The victim’s brother, using the handle @Mr_Robmichael1 on X, claimed that the officers stopped a commercial bus, abducted his brother, and took him to an unidentified village where the extortion occurred. He also noted that ₦50,000 was charged as a POS fee.
Following intervention by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Dan Ndukwe, and the Divisional Police Officer, the money was recovered from the officers involved. Mr. Robmichael expressed gratitude for the swift response, crediting the DPO for personally addressing the issue and ensuring the funds were returned.
Ndukwe condemned the incident, describing the extortion as unacceptable and pledging that the officers involved would face disciplinary action. “Refunding the money isn’t enough,” he stated, emphasizing that the police force would not tolerate such behavior.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about misconduct within the Nigerian Police Force, with previous cases of extortion reported, including a similar case involving National Youth Service Corps members in Lagos.
