A 40-year-old man, Timothy Atolagbe, has been charged with defrauding a prospective student of N9,879,928 under the false pretense of securing a Canadian study visa.
The charges, presented at the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Iba, include conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretenses, and forgery. Prosecutors allege that Atolagbe, alongside unidentified accomplices, committed the offenses between July 2023 and June 2024 in Ajangbadi, Lagos State.
The victim, Damilola Michael, reportedly paid the sum to Atolagbe, who claimed he could facilitate a study visa through forged documents linked to CBBC Career College, Canada.
Atolagbe also faces allegations of obtaining N150,000 from another individual, Durosimi Adeola, under the guise of securing employment.
The defendant pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of N4 million, with two sureties required. The court has set January 17, 2025, for the case’s next hearing.
