The driver of the Lexus Jeep, whose identity has not been disclosed, allegedly attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver, leading to a loss of control. The Jeep rammed into the two commercial vehicles, causing injuries to seven passengers.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq stated that the driver of the Lexus Jeep absconded immediately after the incident. Taofiq noted that preliminary findings indicate that the driver engaged in a perilous and unlawful overtaking maneuver on the highway.
The injured persons were rescued and taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital for medical attention. Emergency responders, including the police, ensured that normalcy was maintained in the area.
LASTMA personnel, in synergy with security operatives from the Area N Police Division, secured the accident scene, managed traffic disruptions, and facilitated the evacuation of the wrecked vehicles.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concerns over reckless driving by motorists and urged them to always adhere to traffic rules. Bakare-Oki stated that the government has strategically positioned road signs to guide motorists and ensure orderliness on the highways.
He advised drivers to exercise utmost vigilance and confirm absolute clearance before attempting to overtake, as recklessness on the road can have devastating consequences. The GM expressed sympathy to the injured passengers.
This incident highlights the need for motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents and ensure safety on the roads.
