President Bola Tinubu has condemned the recent violence in Plateau State, calling on the state government to find a lasting solution to the persistent communal conflicts. This comes after at least 51 people were killed by gunmen in the Zikke and Kakpa communities in Bassa Local Government Area, marking another tragic episode in the state’s history of violence between farmers and cattle herders.

The attack, which began around 12 am on Monday, left several people injured, with many evacuated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital. Gunmen invaded the community in large numbers, shooting and burning houses. Amnesty International Nigeria reported that the gunmen also razed and looted homes, calling for an investigation into the “inexcusable security lapses” that enabled the attack.
Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over the bloodshed and extended his condolences to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the state government, and the people of Plateau. He emphasized the need for unity and harmony across ethnic and religious lines, urging community, spiritual, and political leaders to work together to halt the cycle of retaliatory attacks. The President instructed security agencies to thoroughly investigate the crisis and identify those responsible for orchestrating the violent acts.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association called on the Federal Government to declare Fulani militants a terrorist organization, citing persistent attacks on Plateau communities. They also condemned the killings in Hurti, Bokkos, and Irigwe Kimakpa, as well as the recent attack on Zikke and Kakpa villages, which claimed over 50 lives.
Plateau State has experienced recurring violence between farmers and herders, often fueled by ethno-religious tensions and competition for resources. Climate change and the reduction of grazing land through agricultural expansion have exacerbated the conflict. Despite numerous commissions and peace conferences, lasting solutions have eluded the state.
In a separate incident, troops of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, and Operation Safe Haven rescued 16 passengers kidnapped along the Jos-Mangu road. The rescue operation was initiated after troops discovered an abandoned vehicle, and the kidnappers were forced to flee after a firefight.
President Tinubu reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Plateau State government in fostering dialogue, social cohesion, and accountability. The President’s stance is crucial, given the historical context of the conflict and the need for a lasting solution. With over 10,000 displaced persons in IDP camps from previous attacks, finding a permanent resolution is imperative
