“Nigeria Has Made Significant Strides In Asset Recovery” _Rev. David Ugolor

In any society striving for peace, justice, and development, strong and accountable law enforcement institutions are indispensable. Agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and others play critical roles in maintaining law and order, safeguarding lives and property, and upholding the rule of law.

While it is true that these institutions are not without flaws—marked at times by corruption, abuse of power, and inefficiency—it is equally true that abandoning or weakening them is not the solution. Rather, our collective focus must be on reforming and strengthening these bodies so they can fulfill their constitutional duties effectively and with integrity.

Corruption, kidnapping, armed robbery, cybercrime, and violent extremism are not distant tragedies—they affect real people in real families. Behind every victim is a grieving parent, a devastated spouse, or a community left in fear. The pain of these crimes runs deep, and it is our law enforcement agencies that stand as the first line of defense against such suffering. When these institutions are empowered, trained, and held accountable, they become powerful tools for justice and protection.

We must also acknowledge the brave men and women in uniform who risk their lives daily to protect us. Not all officers are corrupt. Many serve with honor, commitment, and selflessness. They deserve our support, respect, and encouragement. At the same time, we must continue to demand the removal and prosecution of those within the system who betray the public trust. There is no room for impunity.

Reforming law enforcement is not just about internal discipline—it’s about restoring public confidence. This includes better training, improved welfare, community engagement, use of technology, and strict oversight. A trusted and professional police force or anti-corruption agency doesn’t only respond to crimes; it deters them. And a society with credible institutions is one where citizens feel safe, justice is accessible, and development can thrive.

In supporting our law enforcement agencies, we are not turning a blind eye to their shortcomings—we are embracing our responsibility to help fix them. To build a just and secure society, we must stop seeing the fight against crime and corruption as someone else’s job. It is ours. Strengthening our institutions is a duty to ourselves, to our neighbors, and to future generations.

Let us stand united—not in silence or indifference, but in active support and constructive engagement. Only then can we build a Nigeria where law and justice are not just ideals, but realities for every citizen.
