Rome, Italy – 25/05/2025 – In a bold and purposeful move during her ongoing diaspora engagement tour, the Director General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Dr. Mrs. Loretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor, paid a strategic visit to the Nigerian Embassy in Rome, Italy. Accompanied by her team, the visit marks a critical step in addressing long-standing concerns of Edo citizens abroad, particularly on the issue of passport renewal.

During her meeting with the Charge de Mission at the Embassy, Dr. Ogboro-Okor delivered a clear message on behalf of Nigerians especially Edo indigenes in Italy:
“Our people cannot keep paying at least €500 for the renewal of passports.”

This direct statement reflects a deep frustration in the diaspora community over exorbitant, unofficial charges associated with passport services. In response, the Charge de Mission delivered a firm and reassuring message:

HIS MESSAGE IS CLEAR:

  1. Online applications now work – Nigerians are encouraged to utilize the official online platform for passport applications and renewals.

  2. The embassy does not collect any fees beyond what is published on the official website – Any additional charges are unofficial and should be reported.

  3. Community mobilization is crucial – The Charge emphasized:
“Tell your people, tell a friend to tell a friend—let’s use our phones and computers. Do online applications.”

  4. Support from community leaders is essential – Leaders in the Nigerian and Edo communities abroad are urged to assist members who may not be tech-savvy or familiar with the online process.

Dr. Ogboro-Okor applauded the embassy’s clarity and vowed to amplify this message across all Edo diaspora communities. She emphasized the need for transparency, accessibility, and empowerment especially for those who are often taken advantage of due to lack of information or digital literacy.

This visit underscores the Edo State Diaspora Agency’s mission under the leadership of Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, to protect the interests of its citizens abroad, ensure accountability, and strengthen trust between the diaspora and Nigerian institutions.
