Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive steps to confront rising insecurity and boundary-related crises in the state with the inauguration of two critical committees the Livestock Control Committee and the Boundary Committee.
The move, according to the Governor, is part of his administration’s drive to ensure peace, security, and orderly land management in Edo communities.
Addressing the threat of herders-farmers clashes, Governor Okpebholo charged members of the newly established Livestock Control Committee to confine livestock movement to regulated areas and address security risks posed by uncontrolled grazing.
Retired General Cecil Esekhaigbe will chair the 27-man committee, which includes seasoned professionals and security experts. The Governor emphasised the seriousness of the assignment, noting:
“We must handle this task carefully and with the fear of God, so that we can finally bring an end to these incessant clashes between herders and farmers.”
In his response, General Esekhaigbe assured the Governor of the committee’s commitment, describing the terms of reference as clear and crucial to the state’s security agenda.
The committee will regulate livestock movement, inspect ranches, register herders, and provide regular security reports to the state government.
In a related move, Governor Okpebholo also inaugurated a Boundary Committee to resolve land disputes within Edo and between neighbouring states.
Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa chairs the 14-member committee, which includes CP Monday Agbonika, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon, and respected traditional institution representatives.
Governor Okpebholo spoke regarding the magnitude of the assignment during the inauguration:
“Communities along our boundaries with Lagos, Ondo, Delta, and Kogi have longstanding crises. This committee has the expertise and mandate to resolve them decisively.”
In his remarks, Chairman Idahosa expressed appreciation for the Governor’s confidence, pledging that the committee would deliver on its mandate with fairness and integrity.
“We will work to ensure accurate demarcation, peaceful coexistence among communities, and promote development in affected areas.”
The inauguration of both committees, held on the same day, signals a bold, comprehensive strategy by Governor Okpebholo’s administration to curb insecurity and foster sustainable development in Edo State.
