The Federal Government has officially commended the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his swift intervention on the dilapidated 23-kilometre Benin–Warri Road, a key economic artery connecting the South-South region to other parts of the country.

In a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Works in Abuja, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, described Governor Okpebholo’s emergency intervention as “proactive leadership in action,” praising the governor for stepping up where federal infrastructure had suffered prolonged neglect.

The statement noted that the Edo State Government’s ongoing reconstruction work — especially around critical failed sections near Ologbo and the bypass axis — has not only restored vehicular movement but also relieved thousands of commuters, traders, and transporters who ply the route daily.

“Governor Okpebholo’s decisive effort on the Benin–Warri Road deserves national recognition,” the Ministry’s statement read. “This is the caliber of leadership Nigeria needs — one that prioritizes the people, irrespective of administrative boundaries.”

The 23km stretch had remained nearly impassable for months due to erosion, deep gullies, and severe potholes, crippling travel and commercial activities between Benin City and Warri. However, the road is now witnessing full reconstruction under the supervision of the Edo State Ministry of Works, with asphalt pavers, heavy equipment, and engineering crews mobilized to site.

During a recent inspection visit, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the infrastructural challenges confronting Edo people, irrespective of whether they fall under federal or state responsibility.

“This road may belong to the Federal Government, but the people suffering on it are Edo people and Nigerians,” the governor declared. “We cannot watch our people endure hardship while we trade blame over jurisdiction. We’ve stepped in because responsible leadership means being present when it matters most.”

He further disclosed that the state government is actively engaging the Federal Ministry of Works for formal collaboration, requesting prompt approvals and reimbursements for the state’s emergency intervention.

Grateful residents, business operators, and commuters have since hailed the state government’s action, describing it as timely and lifesaving. Many noted that travel time has been cut significantly and the threat of road accidents has sharply reduced.

Economic activity is also picking up along the corridor, with traders and transporters describing the intervention as a major boost to regional commerce.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works, has assured of its readiness to partner with Edo State on other infrastructure projects while pledging to accelerate financial and technical support for the full rehabilitation of the Benin–Warri Road.
