The Edo State Police Command has busted a criminal syndicate involving a serving police inspector and three civilians accused of extorting, brutalising, and robbing residents in Benin City.
The breakthrough followed a viral video in which a victim alleged he was abducted by policemen, dispossessed of his phone and valuables, and subjected to harassment. Acting on the complaint, Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators.
On August 15, 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepted the suspects driving a silver Toyota Yaris. A serving police inspector, identified as Ojo Oloruntobi, was arrested alongside three alleged accomplices—Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho. Police said the group had been operating as a criminal gang, using intimidation and extortion to terrorise citizens.
Describing the case as “shameful and criminal,” the Command vowed that the arrested officer and his civilian collaborators would face the full weight of the law. CP Agbonika reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, and unprofessional conduct, warning that “any policeman found engaging in misconduct, extortion or brutality will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted.”
The Command also urged the victim in the viral video, along with other residents with credible information, to come forward and assist investigations.
According to CP Agbonika, the Edo State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property, restoring public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
