The Lagos State Government has said it is working with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to formalise and regularise the operations of commercial minibuses, popularly known as “Danfo.”
The Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed this in a Channels Television interview on Friday. She explained that the plan is part of the state’s efforts to modernise its transport system, ensure compliance with traffic regulations, and integrate informal transport operators into an organised framework.
According to her, “Danfo buses are a reality of Lagos. What the government is doing is not to eliminate them but to make sure they are regulated, safe, and efficient for commuters.”
She added that the partnership with NURTW would help enforce discipline among operators, improve passenger safety, and align with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s overall transport master plan.
Akinajo further noted that while the state is investing heavily in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), rail, and waterways, the regularisation of Danfo buses remains crucial because of their widespread use by millions of residents daily.
