The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State Council of has commended The State Governor, Monday Okpebholo for recent policy decisions and infrastructural strides, while also calling attention to pressing issues affecting the state.
Rising from its monthly congress held on August 27, 2025, at the NUJ Secretariat in GRA, Benin City, the union, which had representatives from all 16 chapels in attendance, lauded the governor for banning graduation ceremonies in kindergarten and primary schools, describing it as a step in the right direction for educational discipline.
The NUJ also praised the ongoing flyover project at Ramat Park, Ikpoba Hill, but urged the state government to urgently address the deplorable state of roads within the Government Reservation Area (GRA). It further appealed for improved engagement between government officials and journalists on developmental projects and policies.
They equally applauded the successes recorded in the fight against cultism under Okpebholo’s administration, calling for sustained efforts. However, it expressed concern over the resurgence of Community Development Associations (CDAs) in some parts of Edo South Senatorial District, urging the government to put firm measures in place to curb their activities and sanction violators.
The Congress sympathized with ITV/Radio Benin over the recent fire incident that damaged parts of its building, giving thanks that no lives were lost. It also cautioned journalists in the state against blackmailing colleagues before employers and politicians.
In addition, the union wished its Deputy National President, Comrade Oyetunde Abimbola, well in her new role.
