A three-storey building collapsed late Friday night at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos State, leaving one person dead and several others trapped beneath the rubble.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in its Day 2 incident update on Saturday, confirmed that the body of a male victim had been recovered, while four persons were rescued alive and are in stable condition.
Emergency responders, including officials of NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other support agencies, remain on-site conducting search and rescue operations.
While the exact number of those still trapped is unclear, eyewitness accounts suggest between five and six persons may have been in the building at the time of the collapse. Rescue teams say at least two more victims are feared trapped under the debris.
The site has been cordoned off to ensure safety and allow smooth operations, with officials working through the night to locate survivors.
The Yaba incident adds to the recurring cases of building collapse in Lagos and across Nigeria, often linked to poor construction standards, use of substandard materials, and weak regulatory oversight. Data from the Lagos State Government and civil society groups indicate that dozens of such incidents occur yearly, resulting in deaths, injuries, and displacement.
Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of Friday’s collapse, but investigations are expected to follow once rescue efforts are concluded.
