Benin City, Edo State — Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called for deeper collaboration between Edo State and the Italian Republic, describing cultural exchange as a powerful platform for economic growth, mutual understanding, and sustainable development.

The governor made this call during a courtesy visit by the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Italy in Abuja, Mr Iacopo Foti, who was in Edo State following his participation in the recently concluded Edo Carnival in Benin City.

Governor Okpebholo emphasised that Edo State remains open to strategic partnerships with Italy, particularly in areas capable of delivering long-term mutual benefits. He noted that sub-national cooperation plays a critical role in driving development and global relevance.

“We are willing to welcome strategic collaborations between Edo State, as a sub-national entity, and Italy in areas that will benefit us mutually,” the governor said.

“Edo State is rich in culture, history, creativity, and enterprise, and we believe partnerships built on these strengths will yield lasting dividends.”

Strengthening People-to-People Ties

The visit also provided an opportunity for broader stakeholder engagement across the state’s three senatorial districts. Mr Foti met with key officials, including the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika; Deputy Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Sylvester Aigbobor; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, House of Representatives Majority Leader, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, CEO of Ocean Wave Group, Peter Black Omoh Dunia, and the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, among other stakeholders from Edo South, Central, and North.

Speaking earlier, the Italian Deputy Head of Mission expressed deep admiration for Edo State, describing his visit as one filled with anticipation and positive discovery.

He noted that, contrary to some perceptions outside the state, Edo is peaceful, progressive, and filled with people optimistic about the future.

“I had heard a lot about Edo’s rich history, dynamic culture, and strong entrepreneurial spirit before arriving in Benin City. My experience here confirms why Edo is proudly called the Heartbeat of Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Foti described the Edo Carnival as a vibrant showcase of the state’s cultural heritage and identity, adding that it reflects the resilience and creativity of its people.

Shared Values Between Italy and Edo State

Drawing parallels between both societies, Mr Foti noted that Italy, like Edo State, places strong value on preserving history while embracing modern development.

“Italy is a nation rich in culture, from the Renaissance art of Florence to historic cities that reflect centuries of innovation. In Edo State, I see the same spirit — a people who honor their past while confidently shaping their future,” he stated.

He also commended Governor Okpebholo for strengthening security across Edo State, stressing that safety remains a key requirement for tourism, investment, and sustainable development.

According to him, Italy and Nigeria continue to enjoy a growing relationship built on mutual respect, cultural exchange, education, and economic cooperation. He cited increasing numbers of Nigerians studying and visiting Italy, as well as Italians developing an interest in Nigeria’s culture, heritage, and creative industries.

Direct Flights and Growing Connectivity

The visit comes at a time of renewed discussions on improving connectivity between Nigeria and Italy. Recently, Obaland Magazine reported growing momentum around the push for direct flight routes between Italy and Nigeria, a development widely seen as a catalyst for tourism, trade, cultural exchange, and diaspora engagement.

The proposed direct air link is expected to significantly boost people-to-people relations, reduce travel barriers for investors and creatives, and further strengthen bilateral ties — particularly for states like Edo with strong cultural and historical links to Italy.

A Shared Vision for Growth

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed that the shared values between Edo State and Italy — including cultural pride, entrepreneurship, creativity, and respect for heritage — provide a solid foundation for deeper cooperation.

He assured the Italian delegation of Edo State’s readiness to engage meaningfully in partnerships spanning culture, tourism, investment, education, and the creative economy.

“Our shared history, values, and aspirations make collaboration not only possible but inevitable,” the governor said. “Edo State is ready.
