BREAKING: Tinubu Removes IGP Egbetokun, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting Police Chief
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, from office and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as the new acting IGP.
Disu, who currently oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, is expected to assume duties immediately.
The development has reportedly generated reactions within the police hierarchy, with some officers said to have welcomed the change.
Egbetokun had faced criticism in recent months over his handling of security challenges and allegations bordering on corruption and the police recruitment process.
Sources within the security sector said calls for his removal had intensified, with critics arguing that his continued stay in office was affecting the credibility of the force and national security efforts.
The Police Service Commission had earlier been linked to demands for reforms in the police leadership and transparency in recruitment.
